Emerald Celebrates 50 Millionth Full Text Article Download
UNITED KINGDOM, November 26, 2007 Customers of Emerald Group
Publishing Limited have downloaded 50 million articles since the company
first started collecting COUNTER-compliant statistics in 2002. Emerald was
one of the first publishers to gain COUNTER status, meeting the
international code of practice for reports that allow clients to measure
the usage of online information products and services in a more consistent
way. It also pioneered online journals and 12 years ago was one of the
first publishers to launch an online digital collection of journals as a
database.
Monash University in Australia made the 50 millionth download in September
2007. With campuses in South Africa, Australia and Malaysia, Monash is
part of the prestigious Group of Eight leading research institutions in
Australia, and one of the worlds top MBA providers.
Reaching the milestone of 50 million downloads in just five years from a
base of 180 journals demonstrates the excellence and relevance of
Emeralds content to its user community in the management, information
science and engineering fields. Emeralds Director for Editorial and
Production, Rebecca Marsh, comments, This is a wonderful milestone for
Emerald and a great way to help celebrate our 40th year in publishing.
This demonstrates that there is a huge demand in the market for management
articles that are relevant, well-researched and well-written and which
demonstrate how the research can be applied in a practical way. This also
signals good news for researchers and authors contemplating submitting
papers to Emerald journals. They can be sure that papers published in
Emerald journals will be well read and widely used.
Entitled A comparison of work values and motives among Zimbabwean and
British managers, the 50 millionth downloaded article was published in
Emerald Journal, Personnel Review, and authored by Joan Harvey (University
of Newcastle, UK), Steve Carter (University of Derby, UK), and Godfrey
Mudimu (University of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe)
Dr Joan Harvey, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of
Newcastle comments, As one of my earliest papers to be published in
Personnel Review, I was delighted to know that it is the 50th millionth
article download. Long may it continue! I have to say that the review
process was fair and speedy and I would advise authors to always consider
Personnel Review for their papers. Well done Personnel Review.
Emeralds content delivery platform, Insight, comfortably handles
150,000 article downloads in a single day, without any impact on the
quality of service for users. This is thanks to the companys investment
in technology to ensure that even at peak times users can search and
download articles speedily. As part of its ongoing development programme,
Emerald recently announced that, through a partnership with the British
Library, it will be digitising its complete archive of journals including
articles dating back to the 1800s. Called Emerald Backfiles, the
product will be available in early 2008.
Emerald celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and from a starting
point of just one journal, the company now manages a portfolio of 180
titles. Customers in over 120 nations from Albania to Zimbabwe use
Emeralds hard copy and online journals with the top 10 country users
