Scopus Forges Agreement with Major Publishers & Societies
to Index Back Issues
Expanding the depth of Scopus' industry-leading coverage with 7 million
records
Amsterdam - January 19, 2007 - Scopus(r), the world's largest abstract
and references database of research information and quality Web sources,
announced today that it has signed strategic content deals with a string
of publishers and societies including Springer, the Nature Publishing
Group, the American Physical Society, and the American Institute of
Physics.
The decision to add more abstracts dating back to volume 1, issue 1 to
all Scopus users at no extra charge, is based on feedback received
through end user research programs and the Scopus Content Selection &
Advisory Board. Both groups strongly recommend that bibliographic
information including abstracts, rather than offering backfiles
containing just the references, will significantly strengthen Scopus'
content, especially in subject areas where older materials are used more
regularly. As a result, Scopus will focus on adding abstracts in subject
areas such as Physics, Chemistry, and Social Sciences.
By adding these abstracts, not only is Scopus' core coverage further
strengthened, it reflects Scopus' strong commitment to provide the most
powerful navigation tool by enabling users to find all relevant articles
required for effective research, including older material with their
full text links.
All publishers that signed the agreement have digitized their full text
content back to volume 1, issue 1. These agreements mark the start of an
ambitious program to add 7 million records from these publishers in
addition to Elsevier to complement and enrich the existing, 15 million
pre-1996 records.
Tim Ingoldsby, Director of Business Development of the American
Institute of Physics states that, "From a scientist's view point Scopus
will make it easy to search through our specialist content and ensure
that all the relevant information needed to perform quality research is
at your fingertips."
"It is very impressive to see how Scopus keeps enhancing its coverage
and I am particularly pleased with the addition of these backfiles. It
will boost results for a wide variety of users," says Julie Arnheim,
Chemistry librarian from Princeton University.
"Loading these archives will disclose even more of our customer
libraries' digital collections," says Jaco Zijlstra, Director of Scopus,
"and it will enhance our users' ability to search and analyze data
within one single tool."
As with all content added to Scopus, these backfiles will be included in
the subscription price of Scopus. They will be made available to all
existing customers on a continuous basis as they are loaded into Scopus
starting in 2007.
About Scopus
Covering the world's research literature, Scopus is the largest and
easiest to use navigation tool ever built. Scopus is designed and
developed with over 500 users and librarians internationally. Its unique
database contains abstracts and references from over 15,000 titles from
4,000 different publishers, ensuring broad interdisciplinary coverage.
In addition, Scopus not only offers users citation information about the
articles covered, but also integrates web & patent searches directly
from its clean and simple interface. Direct links to full-text articles,
library resources and other applications like reference management
software, make Scopus quicker, easier and more comprehensive to use than
any other literature research tool.
