New Science Tracer Bullet from LC: Science Education

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

From the Tracer Bullet intro:

Science matters. Almost no one disagrees. Agreement on how science is taught, the curriculum designed, the method used, and the measure of literacy achieved is quite another matter. Almost everyone has an opinion or suggestion. This compilation provides references and resources that highlight methods, curricula, standards, and strategies that promote learning in the nation’s elementary, middle, and secondary schools. Many of the books and resources list activities and projects designed to engage and capture the imagination of the K-12 student. Some provide incentives and novel ideas for science teachers, methods of integrating standards into the classroom, or new ways of making connections between mathematics and science, looking at physics, or exploring the environment. Other materials seek to inspire and enthuseres both teacher and student, to encourage further study and/or careers in the sciences, or to advance science literacy through the school into the community.

Bibliography — Information Resources on the Care and Welfare of Dogs

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Information Resources on the Care and Welfare of Dogs
From Introduction:

The topics covered in this introduction have necessarily been dealt with briefly. The linked bibliography provides both further information on dog welfare (for example information on anaesthesia, analgesia and health) and also a wealth of information pertaining to practical issues such as breeding, the use of dogs in research and zoonoses. Staff caring for dogs, whether in rescue shelters, quarantine kennels, working dog kennels, boarding kennels or research establishments, as well as those intending to use them in research have an ethical obligation to understand their needs and to meet these as far as possible. This bibliography is an extremely useful resource that will help them towards this goal.

Webliography: Rare Diseases Resource Page

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Webliography: Rare Diseases Resource Page
by Julie Quetel, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
M.S. student at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science

The purpose of this Rare Disorders Resources page is to present an overview of rare disorders as a subject area and to create a selective bibliography of diverse resources that will aid patients and professionals. This Web site is intended to assist individuals, families, librarians, and health care professionals seeking information on behalf of patients.

The majority of Web sites provided are meta-sites that are clearinghouse resources of terminology, medical information, and links concerning many disorders rather than individual diseases. In many cases these Web sites point the end user to links that lead to Web sites devoted to specific diseases. Four of the annotated Web resources lead to information about clinical trials that are being conducted in the United States.

Information for this webliography was found by open Web searches, browsing Web resources retrieved, and following links on those Web sites.

New Science Tracer Bullet from LC: Time

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Science Tracer Bullet: Time

Before the development of modern science, and for most of human existence, time was perceived as a circle or spiral; a cyclical pattern of renewal and rebirth. More familiar to us now is the Western tradition of linear time, a forward moving direction, a flow that represents a line between the past and the future implicit with the idea of progress. As the discoveries of evolution have come to underpin most of modern science so the “arrow of time” has become a given in our collective consciousness.

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

A collection of web resources compiled by Dorothy Barr and Constance Rinaldo.

From the webliography:

Of the many zoology sites on the Internet, some are terrific, some terrible, and a lot are in between. There are many good general sites, and some excellent ones for specific animals, from cockroaches to corals. Since it would be impossible to cover everything, we will instead list a few favorites that will point you to other links and references.
