Watch out for your .yu domain

Are you the owner of a .yu domain? Then you might have heard the news: as of September 30, all .yu domains will stop working, regardless of their renewal date. This means that any content you’re hosting on a .yu domain will no longer be online. For those of you who would still like to have your site online, we’ve prepared some recommendations to make sure that Google keeps crawling, indexing, and serving your content appropriately.

Commerce Department to Work with ICANN and VeriSign to Enhance the Security and Stability of the Internet’s Domain Name and Addressing System

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced today that the two agencies are working with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and VeriSign on an initiative to enhance the security and stability of the Internet. The parties are working on an interim approach to deployment, by year’s end, of a security technology—Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC)—at the authoritative root zone (i.e., the address book) of the Internet. There will be further consultations with the Internet technical community as the testing and implementation plans are developed.

The Domain Name and Addressing System (DNS) is a critical component of the Internet infrastructure. The DNS associates user-friendly domain names (e.g., www.commerce.gov) with the numeric network addresses (e.g., 170.110.225.163) required to deliver information on the Internet, making the Internet easier for the public to navigate. The accuracy, integrity, and availability of the data supplied by the DNS are essential to the operation of any system or service that uses the Internet. Over the years, vulnerabilities have been identified in the DNS protocol that threaten the authenticity and integrity of the DNS data. Many of these vulnerabilities are mitigated by DNSSEC, which is a suite of Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) specifications for securing information provided by the DNS.

“The Internet is an ever-increasing means of communications and commerce, and this success is due in part to the Internet domain name and addressing system,” said Acting NTIA Administrator Anna M. Gomez. “The Administration is committed to preserving the stability and security of the DNS, and today’s announcement supports this commitment.”

Domain Name Sales Of At Least $1 Million

So what are domain names worth? The answer is that it depends. Like a lot of intellectual property, most domain names bring prices in 4, 5, or 6 figure range. But a few have sold for a million dollars or more.

Nonetheless, Fund.com at just under $10 Million tops the list so far for 2008. In addition, Pizza.com went for $2,605,000 while DataRecovery.com reportedly sold for $1,659,000. Now Domain Name Journal reports that Invest.com has sold for $1,015,000.

We regularly post recently registered domain names as they hit WHOIS databases or as they are transfered to new name servers.

The first part of November, as the holiday season approaches, has been a busy time at Amazon.com. What follows are a number of new domains that were registered by MarkMonitor, a company that often registers and “holds domains” until they are taken over by the client or moved to a various name server. They are also involved, as the name suggests, in the trademark monitoring businsss.

Here’s a sample of what MarkMonitor has been registering in the past few days and placing either on emarkmonitor.com or MarkMonitor.com servers. Our focus is Amazon.com.

Far from a surprise and something that’s often done, we’ve noticed that Google has registered a misspelled version of a domain name for the new OpenHandSetAlliance. In other words, no worries if you type the name incorrectly.

On Tuesday, they registered:
+ OpenHanSetAllance.com (notice the missing “D”. Like all of the OpenHandSetAlliance domains it was registrered for one year.

Also on Tuesday, OpenHandSetAlliance.net and .org were transferred to Google name servers after they were first registered (also for one year) on October 10, 2007 and held by what appears to be a domain name holding service.

Btw, in case you are wondering, some typo results with the letter O. These are just a few examples:

+ Yaho and Yahooo are registered and redirect to the Yahoo home page.

The following is an IP mapping of domains in the COM, NET, ORG, INFO, BIZ, US space. The number of domains that resolve to which network addresses. In mid-September we pointed out that several domains with the words Google and coupon(s) had just been registered by the Googleplex. In the past day or so one domain not listed in the September post, GoogleCoupons.com, was moved to a Google name server. The domain is still registered to MarkMonitor, a company uses for domain name management.

Yesterday, another domain, GoogleCoupon.com was also transferred and also shows Google Inc as the domain owner. So, is this another clue that a Google coupon program? Service? Promotion? is getting closer?

Btw, GoogleCoupons.com was also a registered domain to a company in Florida back in 2004-2005.

Once again a bunch of new or transferred domains from the folks in Redmond and only a few from Mountain View.

Perhaps most interesting is Google’s registration of the domain, p6058.com, last Tuesday. Nothing is online at this domain the the last time we checked. The only other Google items from the past week were transfers, Google-adwords.com (previously registered to a company in New Jersey) and AdSenseGoogle.com
