Paula Manzella likes the diversity of today’s libraries.
There was a time when a librarian’s favorite word was “shush.”
But no more.
“I remember when the typical librarian was an old lady who wore her hair tied back in a bun,” said Paula Manzella, whose dark, wavy hair would probably not stay in place in a bun.

Manzella, 44, started working at the library in 1999. She has a master’s degree in library science from the University of North Carolina and is in charge of the bookmobile, New Jersey Room and genealogy department. She also works at the reference desk.
Manzella is enthusiastic about all the changes in her job description, but her love of books and research projects is what motivated her to become a librarian.
“It’s a calling,” she said. “At the age of 8, I shelved children’s books in the library. I did it so I could go into the holiday collection, a place where no one else could go.”
