S.F. Chronicle may charge for Web content

The San Francisco Chronicle’s corporate owner is saying its newspapers will begin charging for at least some content on their free Web sites, according to a staff memo from Hearst Corp. president Steven Swartz.

Hearst publishes 16 newspapers including the Chronicle and Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

The company is considering how much to keep free and how much to reserve for paying online customers, Swartz said.
