Tale of brave Iraqi librarian turned into play

From the article:

A COLOURFUL production based on the true story of a librarian’s heroic efforts to save her library’s books during the 2003 Iraq invasion is set to wow the Top End.

These five performers from Denmark Hypertheatre in WA will be taking to the stage for three public performances of The Librarian of Basra as part of the Darwin Festival.

The talented team started the show a year ago when the Albany Public Library commissioned them to adapt Jeanette Winter’s children’s book The Librarian Of Basra for presentation at its Children’s Book Week event.

Dancer Narayani Lees is playing the lead role of Alia Muhammad Baker – the librarian who hid the priceless collection of books at the Basra library in her home during the invasion of Iraq.
