South Africa: New national library unveiled in Pretoria

From the article:

A state-of-the-art R300 million new home for the National Library of South Africa, which will accommodate 1 300 users, has been unveiled in Pretoria.

It was officially opened by President Thabo Mbeki. The project was commissioned by the departments of Public Works and Arts and Culture. After the unveiling of the plaque by the President, the building was officially handed over to Arts and Culture, Pallo Jordan, by Public Works Minister, Thoko Didiza.

Jordan says the new premises are an improvement from the rather cramped conditions from which the library was formerly forced to operate. “The importance of the National Library is that it’s a repository of all written and recorded documentation relating to our country. In a way the National Library is a repository of South Africa’s memory.
