Tracking Of Users Across Web Sites Could Face Strict Rules

A new online advertising partnership between advertising companies and Internet service providers to track personal activities could be subjected to a tough privacy standard requiring customers’ prior consent, according to U.S. lawmakers inquiring about the practice.

The House Energy and Commerce Telecommunications Subcommittee will examine the issue at a hearing Thursday.

Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., who chairs the subcommittee, told Dow Jones Newswires that Internet tracking across different Web sites should only take place with customers’ consent. Telephone and cable hookups are governed with similar privacy regulations. “We need the same standard here. It has to be opt-in,” Markey said.
