ARC and National Geographic Announce Driving Tours Map of Appalachia

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and the National Geographic Society today announced the release of a new Appalachian Driving Tours Map. Commissioned by ARC, the map features 28 driving trails in the Appalachian Region that lead to a broad array of historical, archaeological, cultural, and scenic sites.

The driving tours map is the result of an alliance between ARC and National Geographic to design maps that will stimulate economic development by showcasing the remarkable diversity of the Appalachian Region’s natural and heritage assets.

Supplemented with colorful photos, descriptive text, and detailed information for travelers, the map has been distributed to 865,000 subscribers in the April 2008 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine as well as to other target audiences in the Region.

Map readers are encouraged to “visit Appalachia” online through the Web site www.visitappalachia.com. The site includes downloadable maps of the 28 driving tours, Google map features to help travelers plan their next driving vacation to Appalachia, and links to the 13 Appalachian state tourism offices for additional information.

Product Review: Sorting Out Life’s Little Complexities With Bento Personal Database

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Sorting Out Life’s Little Complexities With Bento Personal Database
From the review:

Bento is made by FileMaker, which is a subsidiary of Apple. It’s the company that makes the business-class FileMaker Pro database. Bento is designed to help you organize a variety of non-structured data, including contacts, calendar events, projects, tasks, photos and media — just about anything you can think of. Entering data is easy and intuitive, but the trick isn’t so much understanding how to drag-and-drop your content, how to import data and make hyperlinks. The key to unlocking the enigma of Bento is figuring out how you can make it work for you — personally.

Security Lapse on Facebook Found and Fixed

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Last week we posted about some new privacy measures put in place at Facebook. Today, we read of a brief security lapse on the popular social networking site.

From the AP article:

A security lapse made it possible for unwelcome strangers to peruse personal photos posted on Facebook Inc.’s popular online hangout, circumventing a recent upgrade to the Web site’s privacy controls.

The Associated Press verified the loophole Monday after receiving a tip from a Byron Ng, a Vancouver, Canada computer technician. Ng began looking for security weaknesses last week after Facebook unveiled more ways for 67 million members to restrict access to their personal profiles.

(Snip)

After being alerted Monday afternoon, Facebook spokeswoman Brandee Barker said the Palo Alto-based company fixed the bug within an hour.

Remember, if you don’t want something to be found — even with good security in place, consider not placing the content on the web in the first place.

Caveat emptor!!!

Yahoo Supports OpenSocial; Yahoo, MySpace and Google to Form Non-Profit OpenSocial Foundation

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Yahoo! Supports OpenSocial; Yahoo!, MySpace and Google to Form Non-Profit OpenSocial Foundation

Yahoo!, MySpace, and Google today announced they have agreed to form the OpenSocial Foundation to ensure the neutrality and longevity of OpenSocial as an open, community-governed specification for building social applications across the web. Yahoo!’s support of OpenSocial and role as a founding member of the new foundation are landmarks for the rapidly growing specification which will now offer developers the potential to connect with more than 500 million people worldwide.

The OpenSocial Foundation website at www.opensocial.org will serve as the portal for the community to find all information about OpenSocial and the foundation as they evolve. Developers and website owners can now visit www.opensocial.org for the latest specifications, links to other resources, and the opportunity to get involved.

Engineers from Yahoo!, MySpace, and Google will continue to work together and with the OpenSocial community to further advance the specification through the new foundation, continuing several core elements of OpenSocial since its announcement by Google, MySpace, and many others in November 2007.
