Personal Health Records Can Imperil Privacy - Report

Personal health records have been touted as the biggest consumer empowerment tool in decades, but consumers need to be mindful of security and privacy rules before they upload sensitive data online as key federal protections may not apply - leaving them potentially vulnerable to marketers and others looking to mine health information, according to a report published Wednesday.

“Just because it’s medical information consumers assume that it’s protected under federal law - that’s not the case,” says Pam Dixon, executive director of the World Privacy Forum, a San Diego research group that focuses on privacy issues and that commissioned the report.
