UK: Public Libraries: Statement: What young people have a right to expect from their library

UK: Public Libraries: What young people have a right to expect from their library

A statement defining what young people should be entitled to from their local library has been launched today.

The statement, or ‘offer’, is part of the wider agenda to ensure children and young people, both through schools and other institutions such as libraries, have increasing access to cultural services and learning opportunities.

Launching the offer today at a conference at Local Government House, MLA Director of Policy Sue Wilkinson said: “This is a short, simple, but very significant statement designed to help all councils ensure that the local library is a free, safe and welcoming space where young people can meet and access relevant and up-to-date books and other information.”

Searching the Sky: Pattern Recognition Search in the Sky

Searching the Sky

Image-recognition software for astronomy pictures brings professional and amateur astronomers together.

Every night, thousands of amateur astronomers in their backyards point digital cameras and telescopes at the same bits of starry sky that professional scientists scan from mountaintop domes. Although both groups collect thousands of images, they rarely use one another’s results. While amateurs are more interested in aesthetics, professionals need hard numbers.

In a first step toward bridging this divide, a team of astronomers and computer scientists has created pattern-recognition software that may provide an easy way for the two groups to collaborate by making their astronomical images equally searchable

All About: GPO’s Seal of Authenticity

GPO’s Seal of Authenticity

For almost 150 years, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has been the official disseminator of Government documents and assure users of their authenticity.

In the 21st century, the increasing use of electronic documents poses special challenges in verifying authenticity, because digital technology makes such documents easy to alter or copy, leading to multiple non-identical versions that can be used in unauthorized or illegitimate ways.

Tag cloud of 2008 State of the Union address

Some of you may remember that we’ve been interested in visualization tools like tag cloud generating services (i.e., Tag Crowd). We haven’t done one of these for a while, but watching tonight’s State of the Union address, I thought it’d be interesting to visualize that text (courtesy of the NY Times). Let us know what you think.

“Hey, Buddy! Want to Read A Good Book?” Cengage Gale’s Books & Authors

“Hey, Buddy! Want to Read A Good Book?” Cengage Gale’s Books & Authors
by Barbara Quint
A great read about the service.

Despite the rise of recommendation engines on every online bookstore site, readers’ advisory services still persist as a basic function of public library reference operations. Since 1991, Gale (http://gale.cengage.com) has published its What Do I Read Next? series in print; since 1997, it has offered a web-based subscription service of the same name. Now, under the management of a new owner, Cengage Learning (www.cengage.com), Gale has replaced the former online service with the launch of a major revision called Books & Authors. The service distinguishes itself from competitors primarily with its integration of author information from other Gale reference publications. An open web version of the service (http://booksandauthors.wiseto.com) offers curtailed content to anyone and links to libraries that offer the full service.

Patient Drug Information Available from PubMed

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

NOTE: Now available to all PubMed Users (Jan. 29, 2007).

starting October 12, 2007, some PubMed users will see links to a drug information resource on over two million citations. PubMed’s AbstractPlus display format includes links to “Patient Drug Information” from MedMasterâ„¢; a publication of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and a new monograph on the NCBI Bookshelf. (For additional information see MedMasterâ„¢ Patient Drug Information Now Available from Bookshelf. NLM Tech Bull. 2007 Sep-Oct; (358):e4.)

MedMaster drug information includes brand names and helpful information about the drug. Of the over two million citations with “Patient Drug Information” links, 95% display three or fewer links. Those that have more than three “Patient Drug Information” links will show three links and also have a link that reads “See all # Drug Reports,” which will take you to a Bookshelf page with all the links to drug information that can be explored (see Figure 1.) The links are generated using the drug name searches that are expanded based on regular PubMed mapping, e.g., albuterol will map to “albuterol”[MeSH Terms] OR albuterol[Text Word] and the citations retrieved will include a drug link to MedMaster for albuterol.

The links will initially appear during randomly selected PubMed sessions, therefore not all users will see them. We expect that this feature will be expanded to all users if it proves to be popular.

AP launching a multimedia project on presidential politics

AP launching a multimedia project on presidential politics

The Associated Press this week will launch an ambitious, multimedia project on presidential politics, called “The Measure of a Nation.”

Written by veteran AP journalists Ron Fournier and Ted Anthony, “The Measure of a Nation” is designed as a user’s guide to America for people trying to make sense of the changes unfolding in the country and how the landscape of their daily lives might impact their votes.

“What happens on the 2008 campaign trail is only a mirror of the huge cultural story unfolding in America,” says AP Senior Managing Editor Mike Silverman. “The themes of ‘The Measure of a Nation’ are designed to offer insight Americans need to pick, and live with, a president best suited to these unusual times.”

The anchor of the first package, being released for Friday, Feb. 1, is “The Mythic Presidency” — a provocative, 2,600-word magazine-style piece that takes the reader to unexpected places to reveal the cult of the presidency in U.S. society and examines how the myths that grew up around various chief executives inform how Americans will select a president in 2008.

IOM Report on Quality Improvement Database Garners Mixed Reaction

Last week, the Institute of Medicine released a report advocating for a public database to evaluate health care services and review clinical studies, but some stakeholders worry that the database would fall victim to political influence and a lack of transparency.

Statistics: More Education Pays Off; As Does Certain Fields of Training

From the news release:

The field of training can sometimes have as dramatic an effect on earnings as the level of education, according to a series of data tables the U.S. Census Bureau released today.

Workers who held vocational certificates in engineering averaged about $3,880 a month, which is nearly the same as those with bachelor’s degrees in natural science. Likewise, those with associate’s degrees in computers averaged about $3,760 a month,
which is close to those with bachelor’s degrees in education or social science.
