Public libraries have massive support but are challenged to do better as annual stats explode myths

With nearly 300 million visits to England’s public libraries last year alone, over 10 million new books added to the stock, increased spending, and more outlets, many of the myths surrounding the country’s public libraries are buried by statistics published today.

The challenge is for libraries to make better use of their increased funding, further improve customer services, and boost usage, the MLA, the government’s strategic advisory body for libraries, said.

The definitive annual library statistics, published by CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) paint a picture of changing trends in public library usage.
