Report: Health Data Need More Protections for Secondary Uses

In a new report, the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics calls for less reliance on HIPAA and more privacy protections for electronic health records that are transmitted through networks, Government Health IT reports. NCVHS is an HHS advisory committee.

The report, called “Enhanced Protections for Uses of Health Data: A Stewardship Framework for ‘Secondary Uses’ of Electronically Collected and Transmitted Health Data,” states that health data security should shift its focus to “appropriate data stewardship for all uses of health data by all users, independent of whether an organization is covered under HIPAA.”
