Yahoo will launch an open-source program for developing software for distributed computing, with Carnegie Mellon University as its first academic partner in the venture, the search company said Monday.

Pittsburgh is home to Carnegie Mellon, where Vivisimo, Clusty, and Clustermed.info got their start. Google has and are also working with Carnegie Mellon University. Web search historians will also remember that Lycos got its start at Carnegie Mellon.
