Chicago’s NAVTEQ to be Acquired By Nokia

Big news in location based information, maps, GPS devices, voice-activated directions, and more and Chicago’s NAVTEQ has announced it plans to be acquired by Nokia.

From the announcement:

Under the terms of the agreement, Nokia will pay $78 in cash for each share of NAVTEQ including outstanding options for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $8.1 billion (€5.7 billion), or approximately $7.7 billion (€5.4 billion) net of NAVTEQ existing cash balance. The acquisition has been approved by the board of directors of each company and is subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals and NAVTEQ shareholders’ approval.

+ NAVTEQ owns the powerful (multiple formats) Traffic.com.
Real-time traffic info accessible via voice, RSS, web, etc.

++ Online maps/directions services from Google, Ask.com, Yahoo, and MS Live ALL include a copyright NAVTEQ (amongst other companies) on their sites.

+ They are also a major player in services for GPS Devices
Maps, directions, and real-tine traffic info.

+ Asks End-Users To Report Changes, Corrections, Additions via Map Reporter

In July, NAVTEQ competitor, TeleAtlas, announced it would be acquired by GPS/geoweb info service, TomTom.
