+ Yahoo India Adds Driving Directions
From a Yahoo Blog post by Siddharth Vijayakrishnan, Product Manager, India Maps

Now, in India, we drive a little differently. We drive on the left. Or the right, if the left is occupied. We also give directions a little differently. “Third right after the big banyan tree on your left” might leave many bemused, but is guaranteed to lead the lost out here. Starting today, you can search for driving directions — “Indian Style” — anywhere in India on the Yahoo! India Maps Site.

We’ll tell you directions with landmarks to watch out for while taking turns. We’ll also tell you how many turns come before the one you have to make. So, go and take this feature out for a test drive and tell us what you think.

+ OpenSocial: Led By Google, Social Networks Band To Take On Facebook (via Search Engine Land)
Key Points In Our View from Danny’s SEL Article:
+ Launch of Common API’s on Thursday

+ Companies Involved So Far include: Friendster, Ning, Linked In, etc.

+ Why? Combat Developers Who Are Only Developing for Facebook

+ Why? Danny discusses back in September that some were worried that Facebook is too closed with its data. Getting other networks to jooin Google and have a common language (coding, API’s), “can make a play that all social networks should spill their data, thus robbing Facebook of its most important asset.”

+ Google Working to Make Orkut (the social network they launched several years ago), more “attractive.” It’s been during this time that we’ve seen the rise of both MySpace and Facebook

ResourceShelf Comment: What happens if/when more and more people decide to make their profiles and other info private or available only to a selected group of users and not available for public view? What does this mean for the mass amount of data a social network could produce? Also, what about gaming of the system? Fake/manipulated profiles are another issue in social search. Creating profiles for people to generate page views for the author and also advertisers. This, of course, is far from a new concern but comes to mind as social search continues to expand. From a researcher perspective, where does accuracy, currency, etc. of data come into play? While no bio database or book is 100% you can sometimes judge its over all quality by the reputation of the publisher over a period of time. In some cases, info in the database might be reviewed, spot-checked, or something close for quality, currency (often very important) and overall accuracy.

Betsy Wilson’s Crystal Ball: New Directions for Libraries
Recorded: October 16, 2007, 08:30PM, Morrison Library

I am going to imagine the future of research libraries by taking a look back, gazing into the crystal ball, and suggesting four areas for strategic investment. The investment areas include: 1) collaboration and collective action; 2) culture of assessment; 3) the global research library; and 4) creating a workplace of choice.

GoogleCoupons.com and GoogleCoupon.com Now On Google Name Servers; Google & Opera Renew; Australia Approves Google/DoubleClick

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

In mid-September we pointed out that several domains with the words Google and coupon(s) had just been registered by the Googleplex. In the past day or so one domain not listed in the September post, GoogleCoupons.com, was moved to a Google name server. The domain is still registered to MarkMonitor, a company uses for domain name management.

Yesterday, another domain, GoogleCoupon.com was also transferred and also shows Google Inc as the domain owner. So, is this another clue that a Google coupon program? Service? Promotion? is getting closer?

Btw, GoogleCoupons.com was also a registered domain to a company in Florida back in 2004-2005.

Mobile: Remotely Search Your Computer Using Copernic Desktop Mobile; SoonR, Another Option

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

We’ve been admirers and users of Copernic’s Desktop Search (CDS) since day one. In fact, Gary wrote a review of the search tool the day it launched on Search Engine Watch. Since then, Copernic has added numerous new features and remains the desktop search tool we use the most.

A week ago (sorry to be late to the party on this one) Copernic has introduced a beta version of their mobile desktop search that allows the user (iPhone capable, btw) to search their computers hard drive remotely with CDS or Windows Desktop Search.

Take note that the company is very clear that this release is for testing purposes, in other words a real beta. :-)
From the download page:

Copernic Mobile is a preview release and is being made available for testing purposes only. It is intended for our testing community

Features include a secure login and encryption. Plus:
* Displays preview of found items with text excerpts, picture thumbnails and metadata
* Breaks file and email previews into multiple pages for quick display
* Highlights search terms in result lists and previews
* Displays compact versions of images to fit phone screens
* Allows users to download remote files
* Allows instant dialing of phone numbers found in address books

SoonR and Orb are other product that we’ve mentioned many times on ResourceShelf. It offers phone access to your hard drive (you specify the files). SoonR offers mobile Skype access and desktop search if you use the Google, Yahoo, X1, or Microsoft services.

We’ve just installed Copernic Mobile Search and will update this post in the very near future.
