Hoping to connect with younger patrons, the Evanston Public Library is shelving tradition for a new role: instant messenger buddy.

Working under the screen name EPLRef, librarians have ventured into the domain of teen gossip, offering reference services in the same format youths use to trade acronym-laced tales of romantic breakups and fashion disasters.
