Last week we posted a bit about a new category of search tools that we’re calling Search + Intelligence. Several examples here.

In the sites on that page we did a poor job of pointing out what Indeed.com is doing, mining their federated search database of employment listings.

First, they offer a salary info database. That has been around for awhile.

Second, from time to time they provide a Job Trends chart. The current chart allows you to visualize the rapid rise of job listings (beginning in early 2005) that include the phrase “social networking” in their text.

Same concept as the .com site. Aggregating employment listings from a variety of sources into a single database. Indeed also offers a database for Canada.

Updated 2: We need to be a bit clearer.

You can get a “trends” graph for any search. Just enter any term or phrase into the into the Trends search box and get a graph. For example, Journalist. Remember, this is a literal search. The precise words used in the job listing. Which leads to a couple of related caveats.

1) Pluralization Issues
Compare the chart for teacher and teachers.

2) Lack of controlled vocabulary and phrase matching to bring like things together. For example, journalist, journalists, news writers and “news writers” also return different graphs.

Another example: pr specialist, public relations specialist, “pr specialist” and “public relations specialist”.
