KPIX in San Francisco is using a Slingbox to provide a large number of live webcams placed around the Bay Area on the KPIX web site. The Slingbox that allows any owner to stream material over the Internet including live television, DVD’s, TiVo, etc. An example. You live in the United States but UK Premier League football is your thing. Place a Slingbox on a tv in the UK (maybe a friend or a family member), login to their Slingbox, and you can watch live matches on your computer via the the tv somewhere in UK.

The company [Slingbox] says that San Francisco Bay Area CBS affiliate, CBS 5 (KPIX-TV) has found a new use for its technology: the broadcaster is using Slingbox technology, in tandem with 3G wireless data networks and still video cameras, to deliver live and still video feeds, as well as live in-car broadcasts, from around the Bay Area. According to the company, CBS 5 has 28 live cameras, all of which are supported by Slingbox technology: seen out of the Bay Area’s nine bridges have a camera installed on them, as do the region’ major thoroughfares and airports. CBS 5 uses live video from these cameras on air and also makes footage from them available for viewing on its Web site. The site also features live still images from all 28 cameras. “On April 30th, 2007, for the first time ever in television, CBS 5 used Slingbox technology to send a signal back to the station for broadcast from a moving vehicle,” CBS 5 news director, Dan Rosenheim, said in a prepared statement. “As a result, we were able to watch our reporter’s progress as she drove through rush-hour traffic in areas affected by the I-580 freeway collapse on April 29th. This is another example of the way digital technology is changing television news to the benefit of viewers.” Added Sling Media’s VP of marketing, Rich Buchanan: “Sling Media is thrilled to see CBS 5 use our Slingbox technology in innovative, cost-effective, and compelling ways that benefit their viewers. The Slingbox was designed to transmit a video feed across the Internet for viewing on a remote display. CBS 5 has taken this one big step further and we couldn’t be more impressed with the way they have implemented our technology.”
