It’s a busy time for science databases on the web. We had a lengthy post the other day including the public releases (beta) of Scitopia and World of Science the other day. We also talked about Google Scholar, Scirus, Live Search Academic and several others like the HighWire Press Archive, the Directory of Open Access Journals, PubMedCentral (U.S. and UK).
So what’s today’s news?
Exalead, an excellent search tool from France has announced that coming soon, their database will add more than 13,000,000 records from France’s Institute of Scientific and Technical Information (INIST) database. INIST contains material in English, French, Spanish and Italian. The most positive thing about having access via Exalead is that all of Exalead’s features including their advanced search operators will be available. Operators offer phonetic search and yes, a proximity operator*, to name just a few. If we understand the announcement correctly, the Exalead database will contain citations only. Access to the full text will be fee-based with articles delivered via mail. According the the INIST web site, all articles cost $15.55 EUR.
Finally, kudos and congrats to the Exalead team on winning the 2007 Microsoft-ChinICT Award for the, “the most innovative and fastest growing IT enterprises from these two [Europe and China] regions.
* An undocumented feature at Exalead proximity search is that you can specific the number of terms between words. Default is 15 words. Here’s a bit more from a 2006 post.
