Literature: Primary Documents: The prosecution of Penguin Books for the publication of Lady Chatterley’s Lover

In 1960, Penguin Books published an uncensored version of D H Lawrence’s book, Lady Chatterley’s Lover. This file looks at correspondence between government officials with the Attorney General, Sir Reginald Manningham-Buller, following the prosecution of Penguin Books under the Obscene Publications Act. It includes copies of The Spectator (19 and 26 August 1960) and the New Statesman (10 August 1960), as well as a letters to and from the Attorney General expressing opinions on the matter.
