Web Search Results: Something to Keep in Mind
Nothing really new in the article for many RS readers but it might be a different story for others. That’s why what’s discussed in this article, manipulation (to various degrees) is worth noting and will be a new concept for many that you train during an info literacy or web search class. It’s not a good or bad thing (it’s the way it works, period!) but it’s worth knowing about and having the skills/tools to minimize. It’s also potentially useful ammunition to get users to take advantage of the info that many of us share in search classes including:

+ Using more than one search tool including specialty tools, non-commercial directories, and traditional library databases. Maybe even books.

+ Take advantage of “advanced” features. Those readily visible and those requiring advanced syntax or advanced UI. In other words, take full advantage of the technology

+ Create better, more specific queries

+ Critical info skills and info literacy education: Question where data is coming from, why it’s being made available.
