Free: International Phone Calls from the U.S. to Many Countries

A couple of weeks ago, we ran a “ready reference shelf” post with a bunch of useful telephone numbers and telephone services. From free directory assistance to real-time, personalized traffic info. Tons of consumer help listings, too!

Recently, via the Phonefun.us blog we learned about several services that provides free international long distance calls (for many countries) when dialed from any phone in the U.S. All of the service listed don’t place time restraints on the legnth of yor call and registration is not required.

UPDATE 2/16/07: ALL THREE SERVICES LISTED BELOW ARE NO LONGER WORKING.

+ The FuturePhone.us site READS no longer available.

+ AllFreeCalls.net asks you to dial a new number. However, the new number does not work.
NOTE: The owner of this service posted (2/17/07) that a new number will be in place by Monday.

+ The Freephonecallz.com site is no longer online.

+ Om Malik is (of course) tracking the story. Much more here.

To place a call, dial a local “gateway” number that’s usually based in Iowa*. Iowa? It seeems that via government subsidies (to telecom companies in Iowa) to stimulate the telcom business in the state these services exist. Arrington has more.

+ FuturePhone.us
Free calls to 55 countries. No ads at this time. List of countries.

+ AllFreeCalls.net
Free calls to more than 30 nations.

+ FreePhoneCallz.com
Free calls to more than 50 countries. Registration not required. However, registration does allow you to make calls (for a small-fee) to more countries).

Of course many other companies (here are just a few) like Skype, Hullo.com (Beta no longer available), JaJah.com, Yahoo, AOL, and MSN offer either low cost or free pc-to-phone or pc-to-pc calls.
