[...] Perhaps most interesting to the information professional is that more and more people (nearly 50%) are using their mobile devices/phones to conduct other services beyond making phone calls. This is more fuel to the fire that info pros need to become aware of what the mobile web can and cannot offer and also vision how certain services can be used by libraries/information centers. Let’s plan now for the future. As we’ve said many times, the days of the podcast are numbered as phones offer more features and improved bandwidth. The podcast will become the cellcast or mobilcast. No need to first download and then listen. Simply stream the program directly to your mobile device. Of course, it will be interesting to see if the iPhone, due out in a few days, will also act as a driver to more people using a mobile device beyond that of a phone. At the same time, services like SoonR, Orb, nuTsie, and JaJah Mobile will be amongst the types of services end users will not only find useful but can also save them time, money, and effort. Three important selling points. [...]

[...] Last November, we wrote about mobilcasting or cellcasting. Either stream to a mobile phone or device (if you have the bandwith) or listen to a program by dialing a phone number. Again, this post has more. A quick note to point out that one of the companies we mentioned in that post, Melodeo has an end user site at Mobilcast.com. The software required to use Mobilcast is available for about 50 phones, but it’s a no go for Treo’s and Blackberry’s at this time. Nevertheless, ResourceShelf is still a strong believer in cellcasting or mobilcasting. Btw, it’s worth noting that Mobilcast offers both audio and video content. [...]

[...] Paula’s article also contains some trends to watch in 2007. One that we think is going to continue to grow and is likely obvious to those of you who read our site is mobile access to information. Mobile is becoming more than text and as we pointed out a few weeks ago, the age of the cellcast or mobilcast will soon replace the podcast. Of course, one question is will the personal podcast continue at the frenzy at has been over the past couple of years? Something to watch. A recent Pew Internet study said only 1% of the U.S. population downloads a podcast on a daily basis. Regardless, we think that this type of service will continue to become an alternative delivery vehicle for traditional broadcasters. [...]
