Pandora Goes “Backstage,” Music and Song Info Database Available
WE LOVE PANDORA!!! This service allows users to listen to music based on what they like. Using it is easy, simply listen and vote (thumbs up or down). The more you vote the more Pandora can select songs you might enjoy.
Every song is analyzed by music pros for numerous criteria. Pandora also demonstrates what high quality metadata can do. Over 400 attributes.
For almost six years now, we have been hard at work on the Music Genome Project. It’s the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken. Together our team of thirty musician-analysts have been listening to music, one song at a time, studying and collecting literally hundreds of musical details on every song. It takes 20-30 minutes per song to capture all of the little details that give each recording its magical sound - melody, harmony, instrumentation, rhythm, vocals, lyrics … and more - close to 400 attributes! We continue this work every day to keep up with the incredible flow of great new music coming from studios, stadiums and garages around the country.
Earlier this Summer, Pandora released Pandora Backstage. This searchable database offers information about thousands of artists and individual songs. Search by artist or song title. In many cases you can also hear samples of tunes via Backstage.
It appears that some/most of the data comes from AllMusic.com (AMG) which is also searchable. Of course, info pros know that in some situations one interface can be more useful than another. The same goes for how the data is presented. Btw, Ask.com also uses nfo for many of their music Smart Answers that are found directly on results pages when searching for an artist or group. For example, searches for Steely Dan or film music genius, Bernard Herrmann. Yahoo also utilizes some AMG data in Yahoo Music.
