First, the MSN Live Search blog reports that the product is now in 34 markets. Available in various languages, of course.

Second, the Windows Live home page now allows you to toggle between a search only experience and a personalized home page experience. Look for the “search only” link on the right side of the page. Your last selection is remembered. More info here along with a screen cap or two.
