“Old Principles Guide Librarians on Net”
Meet Ginnie Cooper, director of the Multnomah County Library and Candace Morgan, associate director of Fort Vancouver Regional Library. From the article, “The role for a librarian grows more important,” said Cooper, whose library joined the legal challenge in February 2001, after being approached by the local American Civil Liberties Union chapter. The ACLU suit was later combined with Morgan’s American Library Association suit. “Because of all those resources, we are really bombarded with data, and part of the special skill of a librarian is to make sense of all that data and make sure you get a Web site that will provide you with information that is reliable,” Cooper said.

“Upstart Search Engines Try to Topple Google”
A short piece by Lisa Guernsey on Teoma, AV, and WiseNut. One engine that isn’t mentioned in the article but continues to grow and become more useful is AllTheWeb. Management continues to tell us that searchable access to full-text .pdf material is on the way. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Finally, AllTheWeb’s underlying technology from FAST Search and Transfer will soon power the FirstGov.Gov engine.
