Info Industry–netLibrary
netLibrary Has Financial Problems, Company is For Sale
Word today (via the local Boulder Co. newspaper, The Daily Camera) that netLibrary is for sale after failing to find the financial help the company needed. The article also mentions that employees are welcome to stay with the company during this time BUT they will face MAJOR pay cuts.
Key passages from the article:
“The 230 employees, who were paid through Friday, were told Friday that they are welcome to return on Monday to help the company through its transition, but at in many cases a drastically cut pay rate. Each employee from receptionist to president will be paid $360 a week, roughly the equivalent of unemployment benefits.” “Last December, netLibrary pulled out of its $82.2 million IPO because of market conditions. The company had hoped to be profitable by the middle of 2002.” More recently, the netLibrary had launched an attempt to raise an undisclosed round of funding. “Due to the market conditions, and the Sept. 11 events, that fell through,” [Marge] Gammon, [a spokeswoman for netLibrary] said.

Roy Tennant’s latest LJ column on the latest developments in cross-database searching. He mentions projects from the California Digital Library, King County Library System, National Library of Medicine, the Library at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the University of Arizona. Very exciting stuff especially for organizations who license databases from many vendors, each with a different interface and searching syntax. A huge problem, especially in the world of database training.

“Trust: Mining the Community Mind”
Sylvia Lacock Marino has written a very interesting article about how message board, Usenet, chat room, and other postings on the web are being used as real-time market research. From the article, “This new breed of reporting software and services is being provided by a handful of companies that crawl, spider, or index through communities, gathering content from a variety of sourcesUsenet newsgroups, message boards, chat archives, customer-provided ratings and reviews. The postings from various sources are aggregated and analyzed using software that “reads” all of the postings and finds the themes or clusters. The general themes and clusters of information are packaged into reports and sold to companies as an adjunct to traditional market research, i.e. focus groups. Depending on the company, the practice and resulting service can be called a Corporate Intelligence Service, or a Brand Commentary Solution, or Consumer Insight and Forecasting.” The article also contains info on the primary players and tools in this arena. The article also mentions some of the legal considerations. A must read!

OCLC To Combine and Enhance ArticleFirst and ContentsFirst Databases
Here’s some news just in from OCLC. The following changes are set for implementation on Sunday, Oct 14th. From an OCLC press release, The OCLC ArticleFirst and OCLC ContentsFirst databases, which have been available to users of the OCLC FirstSearch service since 1992, will soon be combined and enhanced with bibliographic records from the OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online database to provide a single, powerful serials content resource for libraries and their users…**The ContentsFirst database will be incorporated into ArticleFirst in order to give users the ability to browse journal tables of contents, as they can now in Electronic Collections Online. With the integration of these two databases, separate access to the ContentsFirst database will be discontinued in the FirstSearch Web and text-only interfaces.NOTE: LIBRARIES SHOULD REMOVE ALL EXISTING LINKS AND SCRIPTS TO THE CONTENTSFIRST DATABASE, SINCE THIS DATABASE WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE FIRSTSEARCH WEB INTERFACE. Combining the databases will streamline the search process, eliminating the need to go to one database to view the contents of a journal and a different one to search for articles. **Bibliographic information from the Electronic Collections Online database will be added to ArticleFirst. If an Electronic Collections Online record duplicates a record present in the ArticleFirst database, the search automatically keeps only the Electronic Collections Online record, thus automatically removingd duplicates from the results set. Electronic Collections Online will remain as a separate database, as well, and will continue to offer the following options not available to ArticleFirst users: limit to subscription, limit to publisher collections, limit to subject collections, abstracts, and references.

Web Search–Yahoo
“Yahoo! Gets Friendly With Improved Search”
Kevin Elliot offers a comprehensive review of Yahoo’s recent organizational changes. Let me add one more fact to be aware of when searching Yahoo. Kevin writes, “Finally, if you happen to search a term that doesn’t turn up many results from the Yahoo directory (my test query for this was “moroccan sports”), you will find a link to “Web Page Matches” which leads to search results from Google. If your search finds nothing at all in the Yahoo directory, your results will go straight to the Google results, 20 to a page.” This is correct. However, as we have mention before, this is not the same Google database one searches when searching via Google.Com. It’s much smaller. How much smaller? Google will not release any specific numbers.
Example 1:
A Search on Yahoo’s version of Google for the terms: Chicago Baseball Train Addison 730 Results.
The identical search via Google.Com 1,170 results.
Example 2:
A Search on Yahoo’s version of Google for the terms: “Royal Canadian Mounted Police” Toronto Ottawa 2,910 results.
The identical search via Google.Com 4,180 results.

Info Industry–Fast Search & Transfer
A Bit More FS&T News
Another new product announcement for the enterprise market, FAST Data Search. This is the same product that FAST has licensed to eBay and Reuters. According to FAST Chief Executive Officer John M. Lervik, Essentially we have figured out a way to allow corporations to deploy an arbitrary sized slice of our FAST Web Search engine, except that now, in addition to publicly available Web pages, well be searching through terabytes of data like transaction histories and corporate documents. FAST Data Search makes all this data available online with sub-second response from a single easy-to-use standard search engine bar.” The press annoucementcontinues, “FAST Data Search is ideally suited for corporate environments in which large amounts of historical data exist and new data is constantly being generated and/or updated, or where any type or amount of business data needs to searched in real-time. FAST Data Search offers inherent fault tolerance through its parallel architecture design, and provides sub-second response times in configurations ranging from a single server searching 50 GB of data 50 times per second, to advanced configurations with hundreds of servers scaling to more than 250 terabytes of data and capable of thousands of queries per second.”

Talk To The Database: Ask A Question, Get An Answer
Sharp demos a new piece of software. Cool! From the article, “How is the weather in Tokyo?” A demonstrator is questioning “Maico,” a cute, three-dimensional, 26-year-old female on a display screen. “Yes? The weather in Tokyo? Let me check,” nods and answers Maico, looking straight at the demonstrator. The computer then sarches weather information for the Tokyo area via the Internet. The demonstration was part of Sharp’s unveiling, at the Real World Computing project’s final exhibition and symposium last week in Tokyo, of a new type of interface that communicates with users. The technology underlying what Sharp calls its “multimodal agent interface” can be adopted as part of an easy-to-use, communicative Internet search engine, and expanded as an interface for home networking appliances, company officials says. The company will able to provide commercially available systems that use this type of interface in four to five years, officials says.

OCLC Releases New Web Size Numbers
From the news release, “The Web Characterization Project, conducted by the OCLC Office of Research, has collected a random sample of web sites annually since 1997. The OCLC Office of Research is one of the world’s leading centers devoted exclusively to the challenges facing libraries in a rapidly changing information technology environment. OCLC is a nonprofit organization that provides computer-based cataloging, reference, resource sharing and preservation services to 40,000 libraries in 76 countries and territories. According to statistics compiled for the year ending June 30, the public web includes more than 3.1 million sites, a 6 percent increase over the previous year’s total. A public web site is defined as a distinct location on the Internet offering unrestricted public access to content via web protocols. The rate of growth of the public web has been slowing over the last few years, a trend which was especially pronounced over the last 12 months. From 1997 to 2000, the public web increased by about 700,000 sites each year, but increased by only 200,000 sites between 2000 and 2001.” More on this topic later. “Taxonomies are What?”
In the new issue of Free Pint, Liz Edols provides an excellent introductory article (with several links to high quality reports and papers) about taxonomies. Having some knowledge about this subject can go along way these days. Although taxonomies, cataloging, controlled vocabularies, etc. are “hot topics”, they are also essential topics. From the article, “As we all know, this is an age of information overload. In order to control the glut of information we need to filter, categorise and label it. Librarians have always understood this but others in the digital environment have only recently arrived at the same conclusion.” So, if you’re in need of a quick refresher or a gentle introduction this article will help.
