Coming Soon? A Directory of Faculty, Staff, Students in Higher Education

From the article, “The Internet2 consortium of research universities will try to build a Web directory of millions of people in higher education. The directory would be, in effect, an electronic “white pages” of students and faculty and staff members, with information about how to communicate with them electronically over the Internet…”This is an experiment,” says Michael R. Gettes, principal technologist at Georgetown University, who is one of the project’s leaders. Few directories of the size anticipated have ever been built, and the necessary standardization is often hard to achieve when many institutions are involved.”

From the article, “House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., told high-tech industry leaders that unless they can hammer out a compromise position on a common database intellectual property protection bill, House leaders would forge their own version of the measure out of two conflicting pieces of legislation. The IT industry and other database and intellectual property holders remain far apart on their concept of database protections, with many content providers trying to keep their databases proprietary. However, Internet portal sites and other presenters of information want databases to be available under copyright law, so long as they are significantly augmented.”

Web as a Research Tool

“Web Isn’t Always a Hit for Students”
This article is on target! Kudos to The Globe and Mail.
Highlights from the article, Knowing how to find information on the Net is an important skill for students. But most don’t learn how to search properly…Knowing how to find information on the Internet is one of the most important skills a high school or university student can have. But most students don’t take the time to learn how to conduct their research properlyLibrarians can be a valuable resource manager in a student’s quest to search the Internet for print, video, audio or other material. They can also assist with tips on how to use search engines and directories in order to narrow down a search…Often, students will “place too much faith in search engines, figuring they’ll just type in a couple of words and the search engine will find what they’re looking for,” says Internet author and consultant Rick Broadhead.”

He reviews CyberAtlas, a statistical site for Internet information and and The New Penguin English Dictionary.

Roy Tennant’s latest column for LJDigital is also online It’s titled, “The Copyright War”. From the column, “Copyright as we presently know it is dead. To be specific, copyright law as it currently stands is not only unenforceable, it is widely perceived by the general public as overly protective of publishers and, to a lesser extent, creators. Thus, even as copyright law is strengthened in the legislatures and the courts, it is dead to many in our society.”
